Tips on Growing Various Beans [article from Articleranks]

Tips on Growing Various Beans

Flowering
If you are growing climbing beans it will take around 10 to 12 weeks of time before the beans are ready for picking. Dwarf beans takes less time though. It is a good idea to pick the beans daily as this will encourage the bush to produce more. This applies when you are growing raspberries too.

You don't need to worry about pollinating beans because they are self pollinating flowers. It is crucial that you don't try to grow a whole bush of beans but instead grow a row of them. Cross pollination by insects is possible but is rare because pollination occurs before the flower opens.Self pollination will happen in the petals when the anthers start to get near to the stigma which in turn start pollinating when the anthers open. Due to the fact that beans don't cross pollinate often there is literally no hybridization happening between the two different varieties. You can even grow beans in the center of your garden with other plants like the different varieties of apples.

Watering
Big seeded beans will rot easily and their leaves would be easy targets for fungal diseases too. Watering the seeds often is a big no no. You only need to water them one time. When the leaves of your seedlings start to appear then water again. For all your vegetables, I recommend you water them early in the morning. This provides the leaves with all day to dry. You will cause mildew to grow if you water them in the evening as the water doesn't dry up. You can prevent fungal spores from getting splashed onto the flowers by watering at ground level. If you are growing various types of onions they won't get infected too.

Hint: It is important when the beans are forming, that you keep the water up to the plants.
